File/Marie Rodriguez/Special to The Post and Courier Both Folly Beach and Sullivan's Island will hold "polar plunge" events where participants can bring in the new year jumping into the Atlantic.

What: Start the year and break a sweat at the New Year’s 5K Fun Run/Walk beginning at the Grand Pavilion on the beach in Wild Dunes. Prizes will be awarded for the top male and female finisher. Register in advance.

When: 8 a.m.

What: This guided first day walk around the colonial town of Dorchester will take participants behind the scenes to explore the rich history and archaeology of the site, while enjoying the natural beauty of the park. Wear long pants and hiking shoes. The hike will take place rain or shine. Dress for the weather.

When: 10 a.m. - Noon

Where: Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site, 300 State Park Road, Summerville

What: For the Third Annual Bill Murray Look-a-Like Polar Bear Plunge, attendees are invited to bring in the new year by dressing up as a favorite Bill Murray character and plunging into the ocean off Folly Beach. Prizes will be awarded for Best Guy, Best Girl, Best Team and Best Overall Bill Murray. Before the plunge, guests can start to recover from New Year’s Eve with cocktail specials at participating Folly Beach businesses. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Folly Beach local charities.

When: noon registration; 1 p.m. contest; 2 p.m. plunge

What: At the annual Dunleavy’s Polar Bear Plunge, participants can jump-start the new year through helping raise money for the Special Olympics and taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean off Sullivan’s Island.
