Teen gets 45 years for killing as he awaits 2nd murder trial

GREENWOOD, S.C. — An 18-year-old man awaiting a murder trial in Abbeville County has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after a jury convicted him of murder in Greenwood County.

Prosecutors say Tavirous Settles shot Prudencio Sis four times during a robbery in Greenwood in May 2013. Settles testified in his own defense that someone else shot Sis after the robbery and he wasn’t planning to commit any crime.

But The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports that state agents testified gun residue and other evidence connected Settles to the killing.

Authorities say Settles has also been charged with murder in Abbeville County after he was hired in March 2013 to shoot and kill Jamil Phillips by the ex-wife of the victim’s brother. That trial is expected to start later this year.
