Teen charged with murder in shooting at Bennettsville dance

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. — Police say they have charged a 19-year-old man with murder in a shooting during a dance in Bennettsville last weekend.

Police to Lt. Larry Turner told media outlets that the problem at the dance started early Sunday morning when opposing gang members started showing hand signals to each other.

Turner says 29- year-old Muhammad Johnson got into a fight with other people at the dance, and was shot and killed a short time later.

Police say Deaundre Malachi turned himself in Tuesday. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer. Authorities say more arrests are possible.

Investigators say they found shell casings from several different weapons at the old school where the dance took place.
