A section of Edisto Beach has been placed under a swimming advisory after tests showed high levels of bacteria.
The affected area includes 200 feet above and below the beach access at Atlantic Street, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced Wednesday.
“High bacteria levels have been detected in this section of the beach, and swimming is not advised until bacteria levels return to normal,” said David Payne, who is with DHEC’s Lowcountry Environmental Quality Control office in Beaufort.
It’s safe to wade, collect shells and fish within that area, but health officials advise against swimming because of the chance of swallowing water, he said. People with open cuts or other wounds should also avoid contact with the water.
