Swimmer found dead in the Broad River in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man has died while swimming in the Broad River in Columbia in an apparent drowning.

WLTX-TV reports around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday emergency personnel got a 911 call saying there was a person in the water near where the river meets Interstate 126. Crews were able to find the body a little after 7 p.m.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says investigators were told that a group of swimmers were trying to cross a roughly 100 wide stretch of the river when one of them went under.

Watts said the victim is a man in his early 20s. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning. The victim’s name has not been released.
