Suspect in Johns Island robberies strikes twice on same day, investigators say

William Joseph Owens

A Johns Island man held up two men on the same day last month, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

William Joseph Owens, 24, of Caine Slash Road is charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, first-degree burglary and kidnapping.

Owens hid in some bushes outside a house off Maybank Highway on Johns Island some time after 4:30 a.m. June 30, pointed a black handgun at a 64-year-old man and left with a wallet containing $500 in cash, according to the arrest affidavit. The victim knew Owens and identified him from a photo lineup, according to investigators.

About 6:15 a.m. the same morning, Owens knocked on a door on Fickling Road, pointed a gun at the forehead of the man who answered and left with $100 cash, according to the warrant. The second victim also picked Owens out of a photo lineup, according to the affidavit.

Owens was arrested Wednesday night and was being held in the Charleston County jail Thursday.
