The suspect in the slaying of a convenience store clerk in rural Charleston County, as well as two other women in Clarendon County, is in the hospital after trying to cut his wrists today, Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett said.

Jeffrey N. Eady, 31, of New Zion is expected to survive the attempt and will be placed under heavy guard, Garrett said.

Eady was arrested Saturday in Mexico Beach, Fla., and charged in the death of Crystal Johnson, 37, of Adams Run, who was shot in the head at the D&V Convenience Store on Savannah Highway Thursday. He was also charged in the deaths of Sadie Brown, 77, of New Zion and Maybell White, 65, of Clarendon County.

Eady cut his wrists shortly before he was scheduled to appear before a judge on the murder charges and check-fraud charges. A morning bond-court appearance had been rescheduled for this evening, Garrett said.

Eady was released from prison last year after serving 10 years for armed robbery.
