An alert citizen helped Charleston police apprehend a man who is accused of breaking into a James Island apartment.
Officers responding at 12:30 p.m. Thursday to a burglary on Stefan Drive spoke to a witness who saw a suspect leave the area in a vehicle. The witness gave police a description of the suspect and vehicle, and its license plate number, police spokesman Charles Francis said.
With the information, officers identified and located the owner of the vehicle. Police were told the vehicle had been loaned to Steven Alonzo Smalls, 28, of Forest Lane, Francis said.
Smalls was arrested about 3:30 p.m. on Sycamore Avenue, when he returned the vehicle to its owner. Smalls is charged with second-degree burglary and grand larceny, and is being held at the Cannon Detention Center, Francis said.
He said electronic equipment was taken in the burglary.
