Sunoco will not appeal Mount Pleasant zoning board's refusal to allow it to build a new gas station on S.C. Highway 41 at the entrance of the Rivertowne subdivision, its attorney said Friday.

The proposed station had triggered a big wave of opposition, as hundreds of Rivertowne and nearby residents said they feared such a station would lead to traffic and safety problems. The town's Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously denied a special exception that would have allowed the station, and Sunoco attorney Neil Robinson said the station won't take the matter to court.

However, Robinson said the property owner, Lubert Adler, is looking at its options because it disagreed with the town's decision that the gas station needed the zoning board's approval in the first place.
