SUMTER, S.C. — Sumter County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a suspicious death after authorities found a man dead inside a wrecked vehicle.
Coroner Harvin Bullock told local media outlets the victim was 65-year-old Johnny Singleton of Camden. Singleton was involved in a wreck on U.S. 521 just outside of Rembert about 1 a.m. Tuesday.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol referred the case to sheriff’s deputies after finding evidence that Singleton might not have died from injuries in the wreck.
Bullock said pathologists will perform an autopsy Wednesday in Newberry. Authorities say the death is “suspicious” but have not yet said that foul play was involved.
Sheriff’s spokesman Braden Bunch says investigators are awaiting autopsy results before deciding what to do next.
