Summerville man sentenced to 30 years in armed robbery of gas station

A 28-year-old Summerville man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for robbing a gas station with a baseball bat and hitting the clerk with it.

Tashon Earl Hurell of Boone Hill Road was convicted by a jury of one count each of armed robbery, attempted murder and kidnapping. Judge Edgar Dickson handed down the sentence, according to a media release from 1st Circuit Assistant Solicitor Glenn Justis.

The robbery occurred in April 2014 at the Kangaroo gas station on Boone Hill Road. Hurell went into the store armed with a baseball bat and struck the clerk twice in the head with it before taking money from the register, according to the release.

Hurell has a prior criminal record, including assaulting a police officer with a Taser and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, the release states.
