A 39-year-old pickup driver died on Interstate 26 in Berkeley County Sunday night after running into the back of a tractor-trailer rig, according to the Highway Patrol.
The accident happened about 9:50 p.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 198, between Summerville and Jedburg.
Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the driver as Christopher Hiers of Summerville, who was wearing a seat belt. He died at Trident Medical Center about an hour after the crash, Salisbury said.
Troopers said Hiers’ 2007 Toyota pickup ran into the back of a semitrailer that was slowing down, then ran off the right side of the road and into a ditch.
Hiers’ wife, who was a passenger in the pickup, was taken to Medical University Hospital, Salisbury said.
The 57-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to Summerville Medical Center with minor injuries.
