A 34-year-old Summerville man was arrested Wednesday after he tried to line up sex with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Thomas James Clayton Jr. of Conductor Court is charged with second-degree attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor and five counts of criminal solicitation of a minor.
According to the arrest affidavit, Clayton started talking through social media with a detective posing as a 14-year-old girl in October, and his messages became sexual. He arranged to meet the person he believed to be a child at a park to have sex Wednesday and showed up with three condoms, according to the affidavit.
“At several instances during the ongoing communication, Clayton acknowledges the persona’s age as 14, indicating his belief that he was communicating with a 14-year-old child,” the affidavit states.
He was being held Thursday in the Charleston County jail on $150,000 bail.
