A car that was speeding over the Ravenel Bridge early Monday turned out to be stolen, and officers looking for the occupants heard gunshots behind a nearby motel.
It was a busy night for Mount Pleasant police, but there’s no indication the incidents were related.
Around 12:05 a.m., an officer sitting on the Meeting Street entrance ramp to the bridge saw a red Mitsubishi heading toward Mount Pleasant at 71 mph, well above the posted 55 mph speed limit, according to an incident report. The officer followed the car and turned on the blue lights. The car stopped in the Days Inn parking lot on McGrath Darby Boulevard, and two men jumped out and ran, the driver toward Harbor Point Apartments and the passenger toward the bridge.
Both men got away. A check on the car showed that it had been reported stolen that night. The owner was notified.
While officers were searching the area, they heard several gunshots behind the Red Roof Inn on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard. Officers evacuated rooms and questioned guests but didn’t turn up anything, according to the report. Guests reported hearing between six and 10 shots. Officers reported finding several 9 mm casings around a car in the parking lot.
No suspects had been identified in either case Tuesday morning, according to Inspector Chip Googe.
