BEAUFORT, S.C. — The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism plans to have lifeguards on duty at Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort following a trial run last year.
The Beaufort Gazette reports the department is advertising for lifeguards to work from the middle of May through Labor Day.
The newspaper says local residents have been pushing to have lifeguards on the beach.
Last year the state hoped to hire nine lifeguards but could only find five who were certified and could work the required hours.
The cost of the lifeguard salaries, about $70,000 in all, will be split between the state and Beaufort County.
