Six people were displaced and two people injured in a North Charleston apartment fire this morning, authorities say.

North Charleston and Ashley River firefighters were dispatched to The Park at Rivers Edge on Timbercreek Lane about 7:30 a.m., North Charleston Fire Department spokeswoman Bianca Sancic said.

Crews saw light smoke showing from a two-story building, Sancic said.

Neighbors had raised a ladder to a second-story window to see inside, she said. Those neighbors told firefighters that an elderly woman was still inside.

Ashley River firefighters initiated the rescue assisted by North Charleston crews, Sancic said. Both departments extinguished the flames, which took about 20 minutes to control, she said.

The rescued woman was injured in the fire. Another resident received minor burns to her hands and face, Sancic said.

The six people displaced in the fire are being assisted by family members, Sancic said.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation, she said.
