Shots fired in North Charleston, three schools on lock down

North Charleston police say they found a store employee shot in the chest while responding to an alarm this morning at Knight's Food Store. By Christina Elmore

A store clerk was shot in the chest inside a Rivers Avenue convenience store this morning, police said.

Officers responded to an alarm at Knight’s Food Store at 4226 Rivers Avenue about 8:15 a.m. They found a man inside with a gunshot wound to the chest, Deputy Chief Scott Deckard said.

The man was taken to the Medical University Hospital.

Chicora Elementary, Malcolm C. Hursey Elementary and Morningside Elementary schools were on temporary lock down while authorities searched the area for two men, described as black males who wore dark clothing and had their faces covered.

A helicopter is involved in the search.
