LUGOFF, S.C. — Kershaw County deputies say an Elgin police officer has been charged with domestic violence after he hit his girlfriend, put a pillow over her face to keep her from screaming, threw her to the ground then smashed two phones to try to keep her from calling for help.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said in a news release that his deputies received a 911 call where a woman was screaming in the background about 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The sheriff says 41-year-old Douglas Barton remains in jail awaiting a bond hearing. He has been suspended from his job as a police officer in Elgin.

Matthews says Barton could face up to three years in prison after being charged under South Carolina’s new domestic violence law.

It wasn’t known if Barton had a lawyer.
