The deputy who fired at a motorist during a traffic stop on Monday fired 11 shots into the car, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon revealed at a news conference Wednesday. Two of those shots struck the driver, who was trying to kill the deputy by running him over, Cannon said.

Cannon was standing next to a bullet-riddled, red sedan that was festooned with brightly colored strings showing the paths investigators believe had been taken by those 11 bullets.

The trajectory study, which had been performed by the Sheriff’s Office forensics team, was displayed to reporters to help answer questions about exactly what was going on when the deputy, Shawn James, fired at the car on Ashley River Road on Monday.
