MOUNT PLEASANT -- The new Shem Creek Bridge on Bowman Road will open to traffic at 11 p.m. Monday, officials said Friday.

One lane in each direction on the bridge will open. Two more lanes will open next Spring when the widening of Bowman Road is completed along with improvements to Johnnie Dodds Boulevard, which is being widened for three miles from the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

The additional lanes are expected to significantly improve traffic flow through the area.

For safety reasons, left turns are not allowed from East Frontage Road onto Bowman Road, or from Bowman Road onto East Frontage Road.

The old, two-lane Shem Creek Bridge was closed about five months ago for construction of the new four-lane bridge.
