A registered sex offender was arrested after a woman said she was groped in the Northwoods Mall parking lot Friday.
Joshua Scott Jr., 48, of Kindale Park Road in Kingstree, was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree assault and battery. He was being held in the Charleston County jail on $150,000 bail Tuesday.
Scott has been convicted twice of peeping tom and voyeurism, once in June 2001 and then again in March 2010, according to the State Law Enforcement Division’s sex offender registry. He spent 15 months behind bars after his last conviction.
A 22-year-old woman told police she was putting bags into her car outside Planet Fitness around 4 p.m. Friday when a man grabbed her arm and reached under her skirt, according to the incident report from North Charleston police. He ran when she pushed him off.
The woman chased the man across the parking lot and then through the mall, while she was yelling for people to call the police and stop him, according to the report. Eventually some men tackled him in the parking lot outside King Street Grille. They were holding him down when police arrived to arrest him, according to the report.
Scott told police he was trying to snatch the woman’s purse and did not grope her.
