Second teenage boy arrested in Dorchester County shooting death

Deshawn Khalil Ford, 16, faces murder and armed robbery charges in connection with the June 30 slaying of Gerrod Metoyer.

Dorchester County deputies on Tuesday arrested a second teenager in connection with a man’s shooting death last month near North Charleston.

The 16-year-old boy, Deshawn Khalil Ford of Pleasant Ridge Drive in North Charleston, will face charges of armed robbery and murder in the June 30 slaying of 29-year-old Gerrod Metoyer, Capt. Tony Phinney of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

By law, Ford, like all 16-year-olds arrested in violent crimes, is charged as an adult.

After a bond hearing Wednesday morning, Ford continued to be held in juvenile detention. A magistrate who presided over the hearing could not legally set bail on Ford’s murder charge.

Another boy, 14, was arrested Monday on the same charges. Prosecutors must decide whether to pursue adult charges against the 14-year-old, then ask a judge to approve such a move.

The 14-year-old was not named because of his age.

More arrests in the case are expected, Phinney said.

Metoyer’s body was found on Ashley Phosphate Road near Dorchester Manor Boulevard just outside North Charleston. He had been shot in the head.

No further information about what led to the shooting was immediately available Wednesday.
