COLUMBIA — About 150 soldiers with the South Carolina Army National Guard are traveling to Texas to train before they deploy overseas to Kuwait.

A departure ceremony is being held Sunday at McEntire Joint National Base outside Eastover for members of the 351st Aviation Support Battalion.

They are being sent on a yearlong deployment to support the 185th Theater Aviation Brigade in Kuwait by conducting helicopter maintenance, fueling and logistics operations.

Guard commander Maj. Gen. Robert Livingston says the soldiers are deploying amid continued threats to the freedoms America holds dear.

The two-star general says that even though the world remains an unsafe place, Guard soldiers continue to go in harm’s way to protect the nation.
