SC man stole dead roommate’s benefits for 22 years

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Fort Lawn man has been sentenced to federal prison for stealing his dead roommate’s Social Security benefits.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said Tuesday that 71-year-old Gerald Costner had been sentenced to five months in prison.

Costner was also ordered to pay back nearly $93,000 to the federal government. He pleaded guilty last year to theft of government funds.

Authorities say Costner collected his roommate’s benefits from June 1992 until January 2014, after his roommate died. Prosecutors say he never told the government that his roommate had died and kept getting the money.
