BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — South Carolina prison officials say two corrections officers were stabbed multiple times and five others kicked and punched during a fight with inmates at a maximum security prison.

Multiple media reports say corrections officials have asked the State Law Enforcement Division to lead an investigation into what happened Thursday at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Stephanie Givens says an officer was trying to search an inmate and several others attacked the seven officers. The officers were treated at medical facilities outside the prison and later released.

She said two inmates were treated by the prison medical staff.

Inmates have attacked prison employees or taken them hostage at least three times in the past 15 years.
