SC health officials report 8th E. coli case

GREENWOOD, S.C. — South Carolina health officials say an eighth case of E. coli has been traced to a daycare center in Greenwood that has been closed temporarily.

At least one child appears to have died from a disease caused by the bacteria.

The Learning Vine in Greenwood says it is thoroughly cleaning its daycare after the outbreak.

The owners said they closed the daycare as soon as they got the first indication E. coli might have sickened some of its children and employees.

The operator said health investigators have not determined how the bacteria got into the daycare.

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control says at least four of the eight cases are the same strain of E. coli. DHEC says it is still collecting and testing samples from the daycare.
