Saturday’s fatal shooting victim identified as 34-year-old North Charleston man

A 34-year-old North Charleston man was killed Saturday in a shooting.

Donell Benjamin, whose address was not released, was identified Sunday by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

North Charleston Police Department spokesman Spencer Pryor reported Saturday that the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. on Pearson Avenue. Officers responded to the address after receiving a report of someone suffering a gunshot wound.

Benjamin ran into a home on Pearson Avenue through a back door and collapsed on the floor, Pryor said. He died at the scene.

Police are still investigating Benjamin’s relationship to the home, how he was shot and where, Pryor previously said. He could not immediately be reached for an update Sunday. This is the eighth reported homicide this year in the tri-county area and the fifth in North Charleston. All have been gun-related.
