COLUMBIA, S.C. - Investigators say a Richland County deputy shot and killed a man in a shootout after a traffic stop in Columbia.
Deputies say the officer tried to pull over the driver around 10 p.m. Monday because the license plate did not match the vehicle.
Authorities say the man sped away, then stopped his car, jumped out and started firing at the officer as he tried to run. The deputy fired back, killing the suspect.
Investigators have not released the name of the suspect or the name of the deputy. The officer was not injured.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, as it does all law enforcement shootings in South Carolina.
