COLUMBIA — A Richland County sheriff’s deputy has shot and killed a suspect after fighting with the man he was trying to arrest.

Sheriff Leon Lott said the shooting happened after Deputy Reginald Grant went to a motel and thought he saw a domestic dispute around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Lott says Grant confronted the man, who ran away. The officer caught the man and they struggled. Lott says the suspect took Grant’s Taser twice. The sheriff says the deputy had to fire his gun after his Taser was taken a second time. .

The man died at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. His name has not been released. Lott says officers found the suspect had a bag of cocaine.

Grant suffered knee and arm injuries, Lott said.
