Red Cross assisting North Charleston family of five displaced by fire

American Red Cross volunteers are assisting a North Charleston family of five that was displaced Thursday by a fire.

The fire severely damaged a home on Dorchester Manor Boulevard, according to a news release from the Red Cross. Firefighters with North Charleston and Ashley River departments responded to the scene.

Red Cross volunteers helped the family, which consists of three adults and two children, with temporary lodging, and money for food, clothes and comfort kits.

The Red Cross assisted 7,100 people in similar situations last year in South Carolina, according to the news release.
