COLUMBIA, S.C. — Police say two men shot and killed a service dog while it was being walked on a Columbia street.
Investigators told media outlets a friend of the 8-year-old German Rottweiler named Harlem was stopped at gunpoint Thursday afternoon and the men demanded the woman’s cellphone.
Police say the men then shot the dog. It died a short time later at a veterinarian’s office. The woman was not hurt.
Authorities say the dog’s owner told police he was heartbroken and can’t explain how much he loved the dog, which helped calm him and treat his depression. He is trying to get another dog.
Police say the robbers drove off in a truck and have not been found.
