Police looking for woman accused of stealing wallet, using credit cards

Charleston police are asking for the public’s help to identify a woman who they say stole a wallet from a purse inside Publix and then used the credit cards at four other area stores.

The wallet-snatching allegedly occurred just before 6:15 p.m. Feb. 5 at Publix, located at 1401 Sam Rittenburg Blvd.

The victim, an 86-year-old Charleston woman, told officers that her purse was in her shopping cart and she realized her green wallet had been taken when she went to the register to pay for her items, according to a police report released Wednesday.

She said her wallet contained $30 and loose change, insurance information, a social security card and credit and debit cards.

It was reported that fraudulent charges were made the same day the credit cards were stolen at Target, Belk, Dillard’s, and JC Penney.

Police on Wednesday released surveillance photos of the suspect. Anyone with information about the suspect can call Consolidated Dispatch at 743-7200 and ask for the on-call detective or crime stoppers at 554-1111.
