Police investigate death at North Charleston liquor store

The police were called to Port City Liquors at 8 a.m. for a report of a dead person.

Detectives started to investigate a death this morning at a liquor store in North Charleston.

The police were called to Port City Liquors at 8 a.m. for a report of a dead person.

Police spokesman Spencer Pryor said the death is being treated as suspicious.

Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton later identified the man as 39-year-old Matthew Renken of Charleston. He died of a gunshot wound, but Rhoton wouldn’t say whether the case was a homicide.

The store are 4400 Dorchester Road remained closed after noon as crime-scene experts continued to investigate.

Details surrounding the death are unknown.
