ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tracy Joyce was riding through Winter Park, Fla., on Friday afternoon when he saw someone drive by in his stolen blue Volvo.
Joyce, 40, followed his car and called the police.
The scenario ended when the teenager behind the wheel of the Volvo rammed an unmarked police car and accidentally shot himself in the leg as he tried to run away, Winter Park police said.
“The victim was in another vehicle and saw his car drive by,” said Sgt. Jamie Loomis, a police spokeswoman.
Officers spied the car, which Joyce had reported stolen the night before, in front of a house at Webster and Railroad avenues. They boxed the Volvo in, but driver Roger Donell Johnson, 18, threw it into reverse, hitting the unmarked car, an arrest report states.
He jumped from the car and ran north toward the railroad tracks with officers in pursuit, leapt a hedge and pulled a .44-caliber handgun from his waistband, according to the report. The next thing officers heard was a pop.
Johnson had accidentally shot himself in the right calf. He was booked into Orange County Jail about 11:15 p.m. after being treated at a hospital.
The passenger in the Volvo, Gerald Lavert Jones, 18, also was arrested. He was not hurt.
Johnson, who lives in Winter Park, was being held Saturday on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed firearm and aggravated assault.
When he was 15, Johnson was charged as an adult with attempted murder, aggravated battery and attempted carjacking. That case is pending.
Jones, also of Winter Park, was being held Saturday on charges of trespass in a motor vehicle and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.
