A body found under the Wappoo Bridge in West Ashley this afternoon was likely a case of suicide, the police said.

The Charleston Police Department fielded the call around 12:30 p.m., according to spokesman Charles Francis.

Francis said a woman’s body was found on land near a support for the Folly Road bridge. A street leading to a nearby boat ramp runs under the bridge.

The death is not suspicious, Francis said. It wasn’t immediately clear how the woman died, but she did not jump from the span, Francis said.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Officen responded to the scene, and the Coast Guard was informed of the incident.
