Police asking for help solving rare Edisto Island crime

Police are asking for help finding a man who pulled a knife on an Edisto Island resident and tried to rob him — a rare event in a small community where almost everybody knows each other.

A man told police he was in his utility room outside the house on Palmetto Boulevard about 6 p.m. Dec. 16 when a man wearing a mask and holding a knife came up and demanded money, according to a Crime Stoppers flier that’s being distributed to residents. The man struggled with the intruder and managed to disarm him and pull off his mask.

Police are looking for a young black man in his early 20s, about 5-foot-9 and weighing 140 to 150 pounds.

“It is very unusual for something of this nature to take place on Edisto,” said Charleston Police Cpl. Fred Bowie, who coordinates Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry. “It is fortunate that this incident did not have a more tragic ending.”
