Police arrest second suspect in reported armed robbery near The Battery

Eric Morrison, 31, of Fox Lake Drive in Knoxville, Tenn., is being charged with armed robbery.

Police have arrested an additional suspect in the reported armed robbery in September of a couple near The Battery in Charleston.

Eric Morrison, 31, of Fox Lake Drive in Knoxville, Tenn., was being held Thursday at the Charleston County jail on the armed robbery charge, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said. He was arrested Wednesday in Tennessee.

Also charged is Devon Hakeem McNeil, 25, of Ferguson Road. He, too, was being held at the jail on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and first-offense driving without a valid license.

The charges stemmed from an incident Sept. 19 at Murray Boulevard and King Street.

A woman told police she and McNeil were on a date in James Island when they got into an argument. The woman left and met a co-worker near The Battery.

Two men approached the couple and one pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the woman’s companion, according to an incident report.

The co-worker told police he handed the men his cellphone, car keys and about $420. The men then forced the woman into her car and drove off, the co-worker reported.

Officers located the vehicle in North Charleston and arrested McNeil. The woman was also found and is OK, according to Francis. She was an acquaintance of one of the suspects.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Francis said.
