A 16-year-old male was arrested after allegedly shooting and wounding an 8-year-old in Charleston early Sunday.
The teen, who was not identified because of his age, is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, first degree assault and battery and possession of a fire arm during the commission of a violent crime.
He is being held in the juvenile detention center.
The shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m. at America and Harris streets after two groups of individuals got into a verbal dispute. The 16-year-old then allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired it, striking the 8-year-old in his left arm, according to police spokesman Charles Francis.
The child sustained a minor injury. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released, Francis said.
