The Pinopolis Lock at Santee Cooper’s Jefferies Hydroelectric Station on Lake Moultrie will be taken out of service on Oct. 1 for extensive repairs and a complete inspection.

The lock is projected to be back in service in late December.

Making repairs entails draining the lock by discharging water from it into the Tailrace Canal. It is the same process that occurs when watercraft in the lock travel from the lake to the Tailrace Canal.

Once the lock is drained, workers will fully inspect it. Santee Cooper plans to replace inlet and discharge valves and to sandblast and recoat the lock gates.

The lock, part of the Santee Cooper Hydroelectric and Navigation Project, has been in service since 1942, when Santee Cooper began generating electricity. To check on lock availability, call 843-899-5625.
