Pinewood Prep sixth-grader Krish Patel was eliminated in the preliminary round of National Geography Bee in Washington D.C. today.

Krish, 12, South Carolina’s representative, was one of 54 semifinalists from across the country who traveled to the capitol for the competition.

Ten finalists will compete Thursday in the final round, which is moderated by “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebeck.

The finals will be shown 8-10 p.m. Thursday on the National Geographic Channel.

Students are not ranked in the preliminary round, said National Geographic Society communications manager Kelsey Flora.

Four students answered nine out of nine questions correctly and automatically advanced to the finals, and another 12 participants answered eight of nine, qualifying them for a tie-breaker for the remaining six spots.

Krish did not make it to the tie-breaker, Flora said.
