Pedestrian from Wappoo Bridge crash earlier this month dies

A pedestrian from a crash that closed Wappoo Bridge in West Ashley earlier this month has died, according to Charleston police.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the pedestrian, but police spokesman Charles Francis confirmed the death Wednesday.

The Wappoo Bridge was closed to Folly Road traffic for more than three hours the night of Jan. 10 because of the crash. The call came in around 5:45 p.m. and, Francis said at the time, the pedestrian was taken to Medical University Hospital in an unknown condition.

According to a police report, the pedestrian stepped off of the sidewalk on the West Ashley side of the Wappoo Bridge and was struck by a vehicle.

The report states the pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

Francis said Wednesday that no charges will be filed against the driver.
