SULLIVAN'S ISLAND - Work is starting on a project to improve the path along the highway linking the island and Mount Pleasant.
Officials from Sullivans Island, Mount Pleasant and Charleston County gather on Friday to mark the start of the work on a new mile-and-a-half pathway along S.C. Highway 703.
The work consists of building a new 8-foot-wide path providing space for both walkers and those riding bicycles. The existing path is only 4 feet wide.
Construction is expected to be completed in May.
