Panel: Consider sea level rise in Beaufort airport future

BEAUFORT, S.C. — A panel looking into the effects of sea level rise in the Beaufort area suggests the county airport and the Federal Aviation Administration consider rising seas in future airport improvements.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the panel of scientists, citizens and local leaders expressed concern in a letter to the FAA district office in Atlanta.

They said if the sea level rises 3 feet, property at the airport southeast of Beaufort would be inundated, leaving no access to the runway.

Airport director Jon Rembold says airport design is based on FAA standards and changes would have to based on the agency dealing with the issue.

Rembold says raising the runway would be a large project requiring federal money through airport improvement program grants.
