ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Voters in Orangeburg have elected Michael C. Butler as the city’s first African-American mayor.
Butler won a four-year term with 53 percent of the vote. Mayor Paul Miller received 46 percent. Miller has been mayor since 2001.
Butler’s new terms begin Oct. 1.
Butler ran on a platform of revitalizing the city and working on economic development. He is a career specialist at the Technology Center in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5.
Orangeburg is home to South Carolina State University, a state-supported historically black school.
