One man was found with a fatal gunshot wound and another male victim was severely beaten during a confrontation that involved a traffic crash late Wednesday night.

Investigators have not yet identified any suspects after a motorist was fatally shot and another person was badly beaten during an altercation late Wednesday night on Johns Island.

The incident was reported about 11:35 p.m. by a “concerned citizen” who heard gunfire near 3480 Cynthia Ave., according to Capt. Eric Watson, spokesman for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Arriving deputies found that a black Mercedes had collided with a white pickup and that some kind of “altercation” occurred on the road, Watson said.

The Mercedes’ driver had suffered a gunshot wound and was slumped over the steering wheel. He was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he died. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet released his name.

Watson said a second male victim was found with “multiple injuries to his head.” He was hospitalized, but his condition wasn’t immediately available.

It also wasn’t known whether the assailants and the victims knew each other or what led to the confrontation.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the sheriff’s office at 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
