MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Officials say a pygmy sperm whale and her calf that washed onto the beach in the Myrtle Beach area have died.
Coastal Carolina University marine science professor Robert Young says the mother whale died soon after coming ashore Thursday morning, but the calf struggled for a while on the beach.
Officials say the calf was later euthanized after being taken to Ark Animal Hospital for treatment. Young says it would have been hard for the baby to survive without its mother since it was completely dependent on her.
Officials say a necropsy will be performed to determine what caused the mother whale’s death.
Young says beachgoers should contact authorities if they see a marine mammal come ashore.
