Officials: Man shot by Lexington deputies dies

IRMO, S.C. — Authorities say a man shot by Lexington County sheriff’s deputies has died.

The State Law Enforcement Division says 59-year-old Kimber Key died Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Lewis McCarty says Key had been at an Irmo home visiting his brother, who called deputies to say that Key had a knife and was threatening to harm himself.

Two deputies responded and found Key in the kitchen in the home. At some point, Key was shot in the upper body. State police are investigating, and McCarty said the circumstances of the shooting are part of that inquiry.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave during the SLED investigation. They were not hurt.

State police say there is no dash cam or body camera video of the incident.
