Officials investigating death at Fort Mill birthing center

FORT MILL, S.C. — Authorities are investigating the death of an infant at a Fort Mill birthing center.

Coroner Sabrina Gast tells local media outlets she plans to interview staff members and send a report to state police after the child’s sudden death Tuesday at Carolina Community Maternity Center.

The state shut down the maternity center in 2013 following another infant death. The Department of Health and Environmental Control cited the center for not calling a doctor during a pregnancy with complications.

The center re-opened after making state-mandated changes.

Last year, the mother of another child who died at the center filed a wrongful death suit. It accused the center of negligence, alleging the mother should’ve never been accepted as a patient because she was had a previous miscarriage and prior medical complications.
