One of two missing kayakers off Folly Beach was found near Kiawah Island holding onto his boat about two miles from the beach, according to the Coast Guard.

Lt. Cmdr. Shannon Scaff confirmed Sunday afternoon that 21-year-old Logan Brown was rescued about four miles southeast of Kiawah Island. Crews are still searching for 22-year-old Dean Britt. His empty kayak was found just before 12:45 p.m. about two miles away from where Brown was located.

The two left Folly Beach at about 1 p.m. Saturday and planned to kayak to Morris Island Lighthouse. They were expected back before sunset. One of their friends notified Coast Guard Sector Charleston at 9:40 p.m. that they had not returned from the trip, according to the Coast Guard.

Brown was spotted by an S.C. Department of Resources air crew and rescued by a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office boat crew before being taken by Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital. A Coast Guard C-130 airplane crew found Britt’s overturned kayak.

Coast guard crews covered more than 1,300 square miles during their search over the weekend and planned to keep searching for Britt throughout Sunday night and Monday morning. They are searching an area extending from Folly Beach to the south side of Seabrook Island.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Folly Beach Fire and Police departments and the Department of Resources are assisting.

Anyone with information about Britt is asked to call the Sector Charleston Command Center at 843-740-7050.
