North Charleston police seek suspect who rummaged through drop box, stole rent checks from apartment complex

North Charleston police on Thursday asked for help identifying a man accused of steailing checks and money orders from the Ivy Ridge Apartment complex off Greenridge Road.

Police on Thursday asked for help identifying a man accused of stealing rent checks and money orders from a North Charleston apartment complex earlier this month.

On May 6, officers were dispatched to Ivy Ridge Apartments, 2215 GreenRidge Road, after someone stole envelopes out of the complex’s night drop box, an incident report states.

A 32-year-old employee at the complex told police that she called multiple tenants that day and asked about their rent being late. The tenants responded to the woman that they dropped their payments in the box, police said.

Security footage showed a man kneeling in front of the drop box about 3:30 a.m., the report states. He maneuvered a long, thin, bendable object to rummage through the box and pulled out about five envelopes, police said.

Officers described the suspect as a black man, between 25 and 35 and wearing all black.

The man tampered with the video camera before he fled the area, police said.

Anyone with information on the man’s identity can call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111 or Lt. A. Johnson at 740-2851.
